Catedrático de Universidad
Actualmente es Catedrático de Universidad del área de Tecnología Electrónica en el Departamento de Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica, Control, Telemática y Química Aplicada a la Ingeniería, ETSII de la UNED. Ha sido Vicerrector de Nuevas Tecnologías de la UNED, así como Director del Centro de Servicios Informáticos de la UNED y Subdirector de Investigación, Subdirector de Gestión Académica de la ETSII de la UNED y Director del Departamento. Ha trabajado cinco años como Ingeniero de Sistemas en Digital Equipment Corporation. Publica igualmente libros técnicos, de investigación y didácticos así como material multimedia dentro de sus líneas de investigación y docencia, así como realiza programas de radio, televisión, etc.
Pertenece al comité organizador de los congresos IEEE EDUCON (chair), IEEE LWMOOCS (chair), IEEE EDUNINE, IEEE FIE (Chair Internacional y de Europa, 2000-2006), ISES, TAEE y SAAEI así como es miembro del comité de programa y planificación y revisor y presidente de mesa de diversos congresos. Ha sido co-organizador de la conferencia EDUCON 2010 (Engineering Education Conference), TAEE 2010 (Tecnologías Aplicadas a la Enseñanza de la Electrónica) e ICECE 2005 (International Conference on Engineering and Computer Education). Es co-organizador del congreso FIE 2014 (Frontiers in Education Conference) organizado por el IEEE y el ASEE, del congreso REV 2016 (International Conference on remote engineering and Virtual Instrumentation) organizado por el IAoE y del congreso IEEE LWMOOCS (Learning with MOOCS) organizado por la Sociedad de Educación del IEEE. Es co-editor de IEEE-RITA (Revista Iberoamericana de Tecnologías del Aprendizaje) y de la revista electrónica del Capítulo Español de la Sociedad de Educación del IEEE.
Es miembro Fellow del IEEE (por sus contribuciones a la enseñanza a distancia en la educación de la ingeniería eléctrica e informática); miembro del Board of Directors (BoD) del IEEE y Director de la División VI del IEEE (2019-2020); miembro del Board of Governors (BoG) de la Sociedad de Educación del IEEE (2005–2021) y Presidente Emérito de la Sociedad de Educación del IEEE; Fundador y Pasado-Presidente (2004-2006) del Capítulo Español de la Sociedad de Educación del IEEE y Presidente de la Sección Española del IEEE (2010-2011). Ha obtenido los premios y reconocimientos internacionales: premio 2017 Nikola Tesla Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Field of Engineering Pedagogy, de la Sociedad Internacional IGIP (International Society for Engineering Education); premio especial en su X aniversario de la Oficina de Turismo del Madrid Convention Bureau y nominación como Embajador de Honor de Madrid por la promoción de la ciudad de Madrid como destino de grandes reuniones y congresos, 2017; IEEE EDUNINE 2017 Meritorious Service Award; el premio de IEEE EDUCON 2011 Meritorious Service Award (de forma conjunta con Edmundo Tovar), de la conferencia EDUCON 2011; el premio 2010 Distinguished Member Award de la Sociedad de Educación del IEEE; el premio 2009 Edwin C. Jones, Jr. Meritorious Service Award de la Sociedad de Educación del IEEE; el premio de 2006 Distinguished Chapter Leadership Award y por su trabajo colectivo en el Capítulo Español de la Sociedad de Educación del IEEE el premio de 2011 Best Chapter Award (otorgado por la Región 8 del IEEE) y el premio 2007 Chapter Achievement Award (otorgado por la Sociedad de Educación del IEEE). Es Vocal del Consejo de Dirección de ISES (International Solar Energy Society) España.

Manuel Castro, Electrical and Computer Engineering educator in the Spanish University for Distance Education (UNED), has an industrial engineering degree from the ETSII (Industrial Engineering School) of the Madrid Polytechnic University (UPM) and a doctoral engineering degree from the same University. He has received the Extraordinary Doctoral Award in the UPM and the Viesgo 1988 Award to the Doctoral Thesis improving the Scientific Research about the Industrial Process Electricity Application, as well as the 1997 and 1999 years UNED's Social Council Award for the Best Didactic Materials in Experimental Sciences and the 2001 Award for the Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning & Technology from the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning. He works as researcher, coordinator and director in different projects, ranging from systems applications of simulation techniques, solar system and advanced microprocessor system simulation to telematics and distance learning applications and systems, as well as computer-aided electrical engineering (CAEE), acting now as and senior Technical Director.
He is now with the UNED (Spanish University for Distance Education) as Professor of Electronics Technology inside the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He was previously UNED's New Technologies Vice-Rector, UNED’s Information Services Center Director and Research, Doctorate Vice-director and Academic Affairs Vice-director of the Engineering School at UNED and Director of the Department. He worked during 5 years in Digital Equipment Corporation as senior system engineer. He publishes different technical, research and teaching books and articles for journals and conferences as well as multimedia materials and radio and TV programs.
He belongs to the organizing committee of IEEE EDUCON (chair), IEEE LWMOOCS (chair), IEEE EDUNINE, IEEE FIE (International and Europe Chair, 2000-2006), ISES, TAEE and SAAEI conferences as well as program and planning committees’ member and reviewer and chairman of several ones. He has been recognized and awarded several times including: the 2017 Nikola Tesla Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Field of Engineering Pedagogy, of the IGIP (International Society for Engineering Education); the special award in their X anniversary of the Tourism Office of the Madrid Convention Bureau and nomination as Madrid Honor's Ambassador for the promotion of Madrid as destiny of large meetings and conferences; 2017; IEEE EDUNINE 2017 Meritorious Service Award; IEEE EDUCON 2011 Meritorious Service Award (jointly with Edmundo Tovar), of the EDUCON 2011 conference; 2010 Distinguished Member Award of the IEEE Education Society; 2009 Edwin C.
